Main Session 1:
Connecting for a digital market in the Baltic Sea Region

Time: 15:00-16:20

Venue: Mässhallen

Inspired by the ‘State of the Digital Region 2016’, to be launched at this main session, a high level panel of government, industry, city and entrepreneurs will discuss how cities can be drivers for a digital single market in the Baltic Sea Region by offering attractive environments for digital startups and by supporting and connecting digital ecosystems.

The ‘State of the Digital Region 2016’ will frame the debate. This annual report analyses the region’s current achievements and potentials as an ICT hub. It gives a snapshot of how the development in the region corresponds to current trends in the digital economy. Besides presenting an updated overview of the region’s performance and potentials the 2016 report offers a thematic focus on the role of cities as frontrunners of digitalisation.

At the intersection of globalisation, digitisation and urbanisation, cities play a crucial role in generating growth, promoting the information economy and establishing a digital single market. There are vibrant startup scenes growing in several cities across the Baltic Sea Region. Cities are the connecting dots of the digital market and startups provide the igniting spark to digital growth in many sectors. However, these urban startup scenes lie far apart and are separated by national borders and the Baltic Sea. How can cities interact across borders to boost transnational digital collaboration and an integrated digital labor market? Can we integrate a digital market by connecting innovative start-up ecosystems?
