Accelerating strategic cooperation for sustainable blue growth in the Baltic Sea Region

Time: 15:00-15:50 Wednesday 9 November

Venue: Galleriet

Discussions on developing an implementation strategy for the Baltic sustainable blue growth agenda is the main theme of this seminar. The European Commission Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (DG MARE) and the Baltic Sea Commission (BSC) within the Conference of Peripheral Maritime Regions (CPMR) will present their undertakings to accelerate strategic cooperation for sustainable blue growth in the Baltic Sea Region. A participatory workshop will give participants the opportunity to offer expertise and suggestions to the ongoing processes.

As we aim to make this a multi-sectoral stakeholder dialogue / driven process we invite you to discuss and identify with us in greater depth the entrepreneurial challenges and opportunities throughout the region!

The Sustainable Blue Growth Agenda for the Baltic Sea Region, adopted by the European Commission in 2014, highlights the extraordinary potential for developing the maritime economy in the Baltic Sea Region. A hotbed for innovation and competitiveness, the Baltic Sea Region also features a strong tradition of transnational cooperation for working with and for a healthy Baltic Sea. In order to harness these unique characteristics, the Commission is now taking the development of the Baltic Blue Growth Agenda one step further.

The aim is to push the boundaries of strategic transnational cooperation for the maritime economy and to kick-start the implementation of the Baltic Blue Growth Agenda. Focus will initially be on a mix of four high-potential and emerging areas:  Blue Bio-economy, Shipping, Environmental & Monitoring Technology and the Tourism & Maritime Experience Industry.

The CPMR Baltic Sea Commission recently undertook a specific initiative focusing on blue growth value chains in the Baltic Sea Region, in cooperation with the Swedish Institute and Technopolis, Belgium. This initiative resulted in a specific analysis of blue growth value chains in the Baltic and of the blue growth dimension of smart specialisation strategies in the Baltic Sea Region. It leads to concrete suggestions for transnational cooperation and roadmaps to accelerate strategic cooperation and to support the implementation of the Baltic Blue Growth Agenda.
